The Comfortable Massage

If you are new to massage or a regular and have trouble finding a therapist that gets it just right, here are 3 frequently asked questions and answers.

  • What do I need to take off?

The thing that you need to remember is that the massage experience is all about you and your comfort level.  Everyone has a different degree of modesty.  You can remove as much or as little clothing as you feel comfortable removing.  It is important to know that you will ALWAYS be modestly draped.  Although it is easier to work on a “blank slate”, if you decide not to disrobe we can still perform a massage with modifications.

  • Is my massage supposed to hurt?

In general, a massage is not supposed to hurt.  However, when you have a muscular problem, there may be some pain/discomfort in order to work it out.  There are muscles deep in your body that can become tight and cause you pain; in order to get those released, the massage may be deeper than you like.  The important thing to remember is that you communicate before and during the massage with your therapist in order to keep the discomfort within your pain tolerance. Don’t try to suffer through the pain/discomfort because that will make release impossible.

  • How often should I get a massage?

Every situation is different.  If you are getting a massage for pain management purposes, you may have to schedule 2 -3 massage sessions per week at first.  As you progress in your healing the frequency of your sessions will reduce.  Once under control, you can begin a maintenance program.  If you are seeking massage for stress relief, you may consider a massage anywhere from once a week to once a month, depending on your job, lifestyle, hobbies, and other daily activities.  Your therapist can offer helpful advice in making this decision.
